Studio Weave were commissioned by the MAIA group to develop the vision for ABUELOS, delivering the re-use and extension of the stable block buildings and surrounding landscape.

ABUELOS reimagines cultural infrastructure and hospitality with accommodation spaces for touring artists, local talent and visitors wanting to immerse themselves in Birmingham’s culture, alongside a public arts programme. The site will offer a rich programme of spaces including cultural production, performance & exhibition, accommodation and community space.

The MAIA group is a propositional organisation seeking to reignite Birmingham’s cultural economy, through cultural infrastructure and interventions. This project sets out to establish the site as the new home for the MAIA group and an important cultural hub for the local Birmingham and wider community.

Central to the scheme is the intimate courtyard gardens for community benefit, biodiversity and wellbeing. The proposals set out a holistic scheme which will activate the currently derelict site and attract footfall and use – within a site masterplan. This will be a site of creation, learning, celebration, joy, ancestry and connection, stewarded and curated by artists and open to all.
