In 2015, we joined forces with Architecture 00. Together, we enjoy collaborating in a shared environment where strategic, urban and social designers, architects, programmers and economists practice design beyond its traditional borders. 00 work with individuals, governments, corporations and communities to solve problems and anticipate change, and to design successful platforms and places. As a studio it aims to reach beyond the design of objects themselves to the social, economic and environmental systems behind them.

Colour in Hackney

Studio Weave has been commissioned to develop a coordinated approach to the colour schemes across Hackney’s housing estates by producing a design code and colour palette to guide new painting works.

Colours1

The design code consists of complementary colour palettes and tones which can be selected for different purposes: neutral base colours for large surfaces or facades, more vibrant colours for highlighting remaining paintable features, and bold colours that can be applied to additional detailing or ornamental flourishes. The final combination of colours for particular buildings is not strictly predetermined, instead, the design code draws from a broad family of colours of complementary tones and combinations, allowing for a degree of curated variation and individuality.

The code proposes a process for selecting and tailoring new colour schemes for Hackney's buildings. As a process, the code takes inspiration from a "choose your own adventure" format, where users are guided towards a set of colour palettes appropriate to a specific property. These are based on material considerations including conservation or heritage qualities, building typology (landmarks, blocks, terraced homes), quality of unpainted materials (stone, brick, wood, tiles..) & surrounding context (standalone, cluster..)
